The shrines of Rocamadour were, from the 12th to the 14th C., one of the major places of pilgrimage in the Christian West.
The famous Black Virgin, venerated for her miracles performed in the "Miraculous" chapel of Our Lady, is the object of a devotion which regained its vigour in the 19th C. and continues today.
Rocamadour's sanctuaries cling to the steep cliffs on the edge of the limestone plateau, and are reached via the Great Pilgrim Staircase which climbs from the village street to the centre of the religious complex.
The semi-troglodytic chapels were built during the 12th C. on a narrow shelf of rock above the sheer drop into the valley.
