- Once you have climbed the slope and gone through the fortified gate in the cliff, the real revelation of the walk comes at the foot of the vestiges of the "Château des Anglais"... This term designates fortifications built on and into the cliffs of the Lot and Célé valleys. The oldest of these may go back as far as the 11th or 12th C. and could have been in use until the Wars of Religion in the 16th C. They were used as places of refuge by local people when an attack came. Some châteaux were the origin of present-day villages (Vers, Cabrerets,…) ; in other cases the houses have disappeared and all that remains are the vestiges of the château.
