The castle stands at the end of a rocky plateau forming a spur thanks to the presence of a natural fault. Dominating the country known as the land of the four rivers, it was the seat of an important barony from the Carolingian aristocracy of Quercy - the Castelnau de Bretenoux family - already in possession of a fortified residence in the vicinity in the 11th century. During the 14th and 15th centuries, the castle adopted its final configuration. The de Clermont-Lodève family, who inherited the barony in 1530, undertook major work to embellish the austere castle in the middle of the 17th century. This castle is one of the finest examples of medieval military architecture.
