Abbatiale Sainte-Marie
Historic site and monument in Souillac
-
The abbey of Sainte-Marie in Souillac owes its origin to the Benedictine monks of Saint-Pierre d’Aurillac who established a dependent house here in the 10th C.
Well-known for a relief showing the prophet Isaiah, the 12th C. building is doubly interesting, as not only does it contain carvings of high quality, it also has the distinction, along with Cahors Cathedral, of being one of the only two remaining Romanesque domed churches in Haut Quercy.
